Bloomington, IN - In a shocking move, Coach Lander has left SMU to take an Athletic Director Position with Indiana University.

“I had some great years in Bloomington,” said Lander.  “It’s an honor to come back and try and take the Hoosiers to the next level.  I think Josh will be the coach who can bring our football team to glory.”

Josh Zelman, the star quarterback at Arizona who never got an NFL career off the ground faces a big challenge in bringing the Hoosier back to respectability.

“Kellen Lewis reminds me of a young Dane Wright,” said Zelman.  “I think we have something special in the works here.”

In his first game, Zelman fell behind 14-0 to Indiana State but rallied back to pull out a 41-22 victory.

Houston, TX - After being selected as the #1 overall draft pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, a lot of people thought Casey Cook would need a miracle to live up to the hype..and stay away from his many addictions.

Born poor in East Moline, Illinois, young Casey Cook had to fight for everything he ever wanted. When he was a child and he wanted a puppy, his father made him fight the puppy’s father for control of the young dog-Casey won that fight but ended picking up more than a companion - he got rabies and hepatitis B. With no health insurance, his father sought to cure him with “natural remedies” - Old Milwaukee’s Best and a punch in the face.

Miraculously, Casey recovered, went on to be a superstar schoolboy QB and landed a scholarship at the University of Arizona. What many didn’t know was that he had a colossal problem with crystal meth.

That problem defined his first few years at Arizona where he lost games, played terribly, and got into trouble off the field. When he entered rehab in 2014, many expected his problems to disappear. But he met an aging actress named Lindsay Lohan and the two started to date. Though Casey got better and better as a quarterback, those trips to LA to face USC or UCLA always led to trouble.

But he kept his head on straight and ended up leading the Arizona Wildcats to back to back titles - the only quarterback in School history to pull off the feat. The success at Arizona came with it’s fair share of stress, but the offense focused on running back Redwood Haynes, allowing Casey the freedom to play his game and avoid the glaring eye of the media. He loved it. His entire life was getting on track.

At the NFL combine, Casey Cook wowed scouts with his ability to read - not defenses, but books. Many had though Cook was illiterate, and until his senior season, they were right. But Cook ran a sub 4.6 40, benched a ton, and looked incredible in every work out.

But what many don’t know was that Casey considers the combine to be the worst few days of his life.

“I was in Indianapolis for the draft,” says Cook from his Houston area home. “Everything was going great, I was clean, I had won the title, life was good. But Lindsay was in town filming a movie about a farm hooker or a farmer or something. She looked me up, and showed up at my door with a garbage bag full of coke. I mean, I don’t know who needs that much coke, but still it was hard to pass up. I had finished my last work out, and didn’t have anything to do but wait for the draft. I had passed the drug tests, so I thought ‘why not?’ - we had an amazing time. But when she left to film her movie, I fell into the deepest depression of my life. I had no idea what I was doing.”

What he was doing was walking the streets of Indianapolis with a bottle of Popov Vodka (reverting to his roots) and a death wish. As he stumbled in and out of traffic, he came across a Baptist Church holding a social. He stumbled inside and met Ashley Sanford. A very attractive Southern Baptist from Houston, who was in town visiting her sister.

“Man she was bout it,” says Cook borrowing an expression he learned from Jason Weaver. “She looked like Jessica Simpson but with better boobs, and a better face, and back like Jessica Alba. That’s what I’m talking about. But she had this innocent look, unlike the whores in Arizona.”

After talking for a while, Casey and her decided to go on a few dates. Eventually he discovered that she was a virgin, in the technical sense, not in any other sense. The two fell madly in love.

At the draft, Casey was hoping that the Texans would make good on their promise so he could move to Houston to be with his new love. When his name was called he was thrilled.

The couple married in July and moved into The Woodlands, one of Houston’s master planned communities.

Casey attends church every Sunday and has been local youth to keep them off meth and cocaine.

Los Angeles, CA - Every now and then you need to take some time from the exciting world of the Arizona Wildcats, and look at real life.  We look at Pac Man Jones.

This poor man is being suspended for an entire season for making it rain on some hoes!  That’s it! He didn’t kill any body, he didn’t raise any pit bulls and have them fight (*cough Michael Vick’s family*), he made it rain and he hung with some thugs.

Jason Weaver, Dane Wright, Patrick Rodriguez, Justin Abdullah and Jay Gibson have all pledged support to Pac Man.

With a non-conference loss, and two Pac Ten losses, the Arizona Wildcats are in the midst of their worst season of 2011 when they lost four games.  Though that season taught the team a lot about growth, and learning, it also started the record Pac Ten winning streak that saw two classes never once suffer a conference loss.haynesucla2016.jpg

But the tough season this year has led to some questions about what makes a great team, and why can we point to the 2015/2016 Wildcats as National Champions, what made them great? and why is this team struggling so much?

The easy answer is one man, Redwood Haynes.  When you play this game, you cannot underestimate what it means to have a player who does not have a bad game.  Someone you can hand it off to on 3rd and 6 and he’ll make it happen.  But Redwood was so special because he never got tired, he was always fresh, always breaking tackles, always giving 110%.  He was the reason behind the titles.chadrose2014.jpg

Along those lines, you cannot underestimate a proven offensive superstar - guys like Jason Weaver and Justin Abdullah made the game a lot easier.  They were clutch on 3rd and 4th down.   But while they were game breaking, since they were dependent upon the QB, there were times when they could be shut down.

And finally, does a great quarterback really mean all that much? Two national titles with consistent underperformer Casey Cook, and a solid season under converted Athlete Chad Smith show that it might not be as essential as you think.  This year, with Brent Robinson - a purebred QB from New Jersey, the Wildcats have struggled.  2012 featured Dane Wright having the greatest season ever by a Wildcat Quarterback, and while they were a national title calibre team, they could not pull it off.  What makes Dane, Casey, and Chad great was their ability to scramble, and while occassionally it would lead to sacks, just forcing a defense to spy on 3rd and 5 meant that a TE could open up, or if they didn’t spy you could run for those yards.  The immobile Brent Robinson has stretched the field and spread the ball, but when he is off, he has no alternative.

weaverasu2014.jpgAnd finally, never ever underestimate a defense.  The Arizona squads of 2015/2016 featured experience linebackers, and a deep secondary that did an incredible job of forcing turnovers.  And while 2017 has a lot of future stars at LB (Quinn Scott) and current legends at DE (Nick Robinson), they are very weak in the secondary and have struggled greatly to have safeties come up and stop the QB.

And then there are in the intangibles, the X-factors: team chemistry.  Robinson is a leader, not so much because he feels the need, but because he feels like he’s supposed to be.  Redwood was a leader, the team would follow him into hell.

And so this looks to be a rough year for thecooktoweaversjsu2014.jpg Wildcats,  and they cannot take any games for granted.  They need  to win out to make a bowl game, and Arizona State sits undefeated at #10 - a win there and the Wildcat faithful can still call this season a success because they ruined someone else’s season.  Much like they ruined their own.
